Dr Scott Overholser DDS on periodontal disease and gum issues

August 13th, 2009

As a dentist, Dr Scott Overholser DDS sees many new patients that have not seen a dentist in many years.  Most of these patients, without a regular professional cleaning, have developed moderate to severe gum disease.  This means that tartar build-up has slowly attached to the root surfaces under the gums and has caused the gums to essentially “pull away” from the teeth and bone.  At the same time this is taking place, the bone is slowly resorbing, or shrinking away.  Eventually the teeth and gums begin to absess due to infection while at the same time becoming loose.

Typically, gum disease is a chronic and slow-progressing problem.  However, at times, it can develop and advance quickly.  It is often considered a silent and pain-free issue that many patients may not even be aware they have until it’s advanced and too late.  In the early stages, dentists like Dr Scott Overholser DDS can do a “deep cleaning” under anesthesia to remove the build-up from the root surfaces and facilitate healing.  In more advanced cases, gum surgery may be necessary.
